At EyeSite of The Villages, we are proud to offer high-quality eyewear from some of the most well-known brands. If you are looking for a good pair of sunglasses or eyeglasses to last for many years, Ray-Ban® is a name you can trust. Read on as we discuss Ray-Ban’s colorful history and unique features.

History

In 1929, U.S. Army Air Corp Colonel John A. Macready sought help from Bausch Lomb, one of the largest eye health product companies, to create customized sunglasses for pilots. He wanted to create sunglasses that could effectively reduce the sky’s intense white and blue hues, which often distracted pilots. The result was an aviator type of sunglasses with green lenses and plastic frames. Popularly known as the “Anti-Glare,” this product can cut glare without compromising the pilots’ vision.

They added impact-resistant features to the aviator sunglasses in 1938. The following year, they remodeled the eyewear with metal frames and Kalichrome lenses to filter blue light and sharpen details, helping pilots see clearly even in misty and foggy conditions. According to your reliable eye doctor, this design was patented as the iconic Ray-Ban Aviator™. In 1999, however, the label was sold to Luxottica Group, an Italian eyewear conglomerate.
