Contact lenses are great alternatives to glasses for many people. They are designed to comfortably fit your eyes and help you see throughout the day. Yet, improper care of these can lead to eye infections. To ensure that you are correctly taking care of your contact lenses, your trusted eye doctors at Eyesite of the Villages offer tips on how to properly take care of your lenses.

Wash Your Hands Before Handling Your Contacts

Your hands have dirt, grime, bacteria and more on them. If you don’t wash your hands before handling your contacts, you can potentially transfer any of these to your eyes. Wash your hands with soap and water, and then dry them on a lint-free towel. Then, handle your contacts.

Always Clean Your Lenses

Most contact solutions say that you don’t need to rub your contacts before soaking them in solution. Most eyecare professionals, however, still recommend that you rub the contact lenses between your fingers, and then rinse them with a contact lens solution. Do not use water or saliva to clean lenses, and try to reduce their exposure to water.

Replace the Solution Every Time

The purpose of your contact lens solution is to not only keep the contacts moist, but to also remove any lingering dirt and grime. You should always replace the solution each day. If not, you’re increasing your chances of getting an eye infection. Throw out the solution, rinse the case with new solution, and then leave it open to dry.

Replace Your Contacts According to Schedule

Your contacts are designed to be worn for a set length of time, i.e. two weeks or a month. Change out your contacts as indicated by your eye doctor.
