Eye Surgery: 5 Cosmetic Procedures

Eye Surgery

There are a lot of reasons someone may want to undergo eye surgery. Whether they’re trying to treat a disease, clear their vision or look better, eye surgeries are viable options. Talk with your eye doctor in The Villages, FL, to learn more about the procedures available to you. When it comes to cosmetic surgeries, there are a number of different options available. You can have:

  1. Blepharoplasty: This is a reconstruction of the eyelid that can fix both hereditary and age-related issues. The results from this procedure typically last 10 years. This is the most common cosmetic eye surgery in The Villages and other parts of the country.
  2. Fat Pad Removal: Puffy eyes may be caused by a fat pad below the eyelid. Doctors can remove this fat pad through surgery.
  3. Asian Eyelid Surgery: Some people of Asian descent are born without a crease in their eyelid. This surgery creates the crease that some people find to be more visually appealing.
  4. Skin Tag Removal: There can be skin tags and other growths on eyelids. People affected with this type of growth often wish to have them removed through cosmetic surgery.
  5. Upper Eyelid Ptosis Surgery: An eyelid can droop for a few different reasons. One of the treatments offered for this problem is a surgery that tightens the levator muscles. Your The Villages optometrist can help you determine what procedure is right for you.

Why do you need eye surgery? Do you have a cosmetic, vision or disease reason? No matter what kind of surgery you’re thinking of having, you need to talk with an eye doctor in The Villages, FL. He or she will be able to go over the risks associated with the surgery. Even cosmetic surgeries can have complications you need to be aware of before you decide to have it. It’s important you note that not all insurances will cover the cost of cosmetic procedures. Talk with your optometrist for more information.

3 Types of Cataracts

You may be familiar with cataracts in Wildwood, FL. Typically thought of as a clouding of the natural lens of the eye, cataracts can lead to vision loss depending on the severity and treatment of the disease. In fact, cataracts are one of the leading causes of vision loss for people 40-years-old and older. While this may be old news, you may not be aware that there are actually three different types of the disease.

1. Cortical

This version of the disease is most often found in people with diabetes. It typically occurs in the part of the lens surrounding the central nucleus called the lens cortex. Cortical cataracts are unique in that they start at the outer edge of the lens and move to the center in a spoke-like pattern with a characteristically white, wedge-like cloudiness.

2. Nuclear

Your Wildwood eye doctor can tell you that the nuclear cataracts are most often associated with old age. This version of the disease forms with a hardening and yellowing deep in the nucleus of the lens, which is where its name is derived from. This is the most common form of cataracts. Like cortical cataracts, it is usually slow to progress. However, early detection is still important.

3. Subcapsular

Finally, this type of cataracts is most often found in people who take high doses of steroid medications and those with diabetes. Unlike the other types, this one starts forming at the back of the lens. If you notice any blurriness in your vision, you should visit an optometrist in Wildwood. These cataracts can cause blurriness and are known to progress quicker than other types.
